Filling and packaging engineering

Still vs Sparkling Water Bottling Line

Still and sparkling water share many plant systems but have different product and package operating windows. Carbonation level, temperature, pressure, gas quality, package pressure capability, foam behavior and dissolved-gas retention must be connected across processing, filling and distribution.

Direct answer

What changes between a still-water and sparkling-water bottling line?

Sparkling water adds dissolved-gas and pressure-control duties that can affect product preparation, temperature, carbonation, filling, closure and package qualification. Still water does not remove the need for hygienic storage and filling, but it should not inherit carbonated-process equipment or acceptance criteria without a defined reason.

System focus 01

Lock the package and production duty

Still and sparkling water share many plant systems but have different product and package operating windows. Carbonation level, temperature, pressure, gas quality, package pressure capability, foam behavior and dissolved-gas retention must be connected across processing, filling and distribution. Define product-water treatment and storage, any deaeration or carbonation, CO2 supply, filler inlet, filling and capping, pressure-rated bottle or closure, inspection, packing and environmental conditions. Separate flavored or ingredient-containing drinks unless they are explicitly in scope.

  • Still and sparkling product specifications including dissolved gas
  • Product temperature, pressure, flow and production schedule
  • Bottle, closure and pack pressure-performance requirements
  • CO2 quality, supply, storage, ventilation and site utility conditions

System focus 02

Engineer the complete equipment route

Create a product-by-format matrix with dissolved-gas target, temperature, package, filling basis and expected rate. Compare the required process tanks, carbonator, instrumentation, pressure-rated piping, filler technology, controls, cleaning, venting, CO2 safety and changeover method.

  • Product preparation maintains the defined dissolved-gas condition
  • Filler and closure operate within tested package limits
  • CO2 and pressure hazards have site controls and alarms
  • Good-output rate is demonstrated for each product-format condition

System focus 03

Protect package and line performance

A generic line quote can omit refrigeration, stable CO2 supply, package pressure testing, product loss during transitions or gas-release safety. A machine rated on one carbonation and temperature condition may not sustain another condition or container.

  • One nominal rate is applied across untested carbonation levels
  • CO2 refrigeration and venting scope is omitted from the quote
  • Bottle or closure samples do not match production material
  • Product transitions create unmeasured loss or mixed specification

System focus 04

Run representative checks

Trial representative product and packaging at the agreed temperature and carbonation conditions. Trend inlet and bowl conditions, fill behavior, closure, net content, dissolved gas and finished-package stability through steady running, stops, restart and planned holding time.

  • Verify gas, temperature, pressure and flow instruments
  • Run representative steady, stop, restart and transition states
  • Measure fill, closure and dissolved gas with approved methods
  • Condition finished packs and inspect pressure-related defects

System focus 05

Release formats and evidence

Release separate product recipes, safe operating windows, instrument and sampling methods, package approvals and changeover rules. Performance evidence must state the tested product, format, conditions and count point.

  • Still-versus-sparkling process and equipment matrix
  • Product-format operating-window and recipe register
  • CO2 utility, ventilation, alarm and responsibility schedule
  • Format-specific performance and package evidence dossier

Problem-solving workflow

Turn this question into a testable engineering decision.

Do not change equipment from a symptom alone. Define the boundary, check the evidence and send one consistent record set for review.

1. Isolate the problem

Start with what can be observed and where it occurs. Use these page-specific boundaries to separate symptoms from assumed causes.

  • Lock the package and production duty
  • Engineer the complete equipment route
  • Protect package and line performance
  • Run representative checks

2. Verify with evidence

Check records, measurements, samples or trials before accepting a root cause. These are the most relevant evidence points for this topic.

  • Still and sparkling product specifications including dissolved gas
  • CO2 and pressure hazards have site controls and alarms
  • One nominal rate is applied across untested carbonation levels
  • Measure fill, closure and dissolved gas with approved methods

3. Send a useful engineering brief

Email the items below with the page link, current condition and desired outcome. The Allot Tech project desk can then respond on the same technical basis.

  • Still and sparkling product specifications including dissolved gas
  • Product preparation maintains the defined dissolved-gas condition
  • Verify gas, temperature, pressure and flow instruments

Buyer questions

Frequently asked questions

Use these answers as a project-planning starting point. Final equipment and performance remain subject to the confirmed brief.

Can a still-water filler bottle sparkling water?

Not by assumption. The filling method, vessel and piping pressure, controls, package and closure must be suitable for the defined carbonated product and verified by the supplier.

Why does sparkling-water temperature matter?

Temperature affects gas behavior and filling stability. The project should define and verify its own product window rather than copy a generic setpoint.

Does a sparkling line need a different bottle?

The bottle and closure must be qualified for the intended internal pressure, handling and shelf conditions. Whether one design can serve both products is a packaging-engineering decision.

How should line capacity be compared?

Compare saleable output at the same product, bottle, temperature, gas condition, test duration and end-of-line count point, including rejects and recovery.
